TropSoils, one of the USA's ColIaborative Research Support Programs, was established in 1981 as a partnership between US universities, the OS Agency for International Development (USAID) and collaborative institutions in developing countries. TropSoils' goal is to develop improved soil-management technologies that are agronomically, ecologically and economically sound for tropical developing countries, thus aiming to solve problems critical to natural resource management and sustainable agriculture in these zones. Soils are a common denominator linking the futures of developing and developed nations: TropSoils offers a basis for integrating an appropriate range of scientific disciplines and management approaches. It has two main research areas' natural resource management and sustainable agriculture, and an outreach programme by which the results of research are incorporated into communications, decision-support systems, soil-management networks and training. Projects are funded and coordinated to make the most of experience and expertise in each collaborating university and institution.
