dc.descriptionThe yield of African rice Oryza Glaberrima may be lower than Asian varieties, which might explain why breeders seem to have neglected it. It has more than just its preferred taste going for it. One unexplored quality to have caught the eye of the rice genetics group of the IRD laboratory in Montpellier, France, is a built-in resistance against a nematode (Heterodora sacchari). This causes considerable losses in the Asian Oryza sativa in African fields. The group is working on crossing the two species.
