We must relearn how to live with the reality of drought as an integral part of our lives and livelihoods, and not as a rare or even disastrous event', writes Dr Mbuende, Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), in his introduction to this innovative book and video package. The package, he says, Òis also an urgent call to better acknowledge the collective wisdom of our rural communities and households in defining drought policy and practiceÓ. A combination of participatory learning activities and written and visual resources, the package aims to stimulate participants' thinking around issues of drought relief and development and to enhance their understanding of drought mitigation as part of sustainable development planning. The video includes three films made in Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The video and the book were developed and tested through a series of meetings attended by participants from these five countries. Living with drought. Drought mitigation for sustainable livelihoods.
