The Pan African Institute for Development (PAID) is an international, African, nongovernmental and non-proft organization; which contributes to the promotion of integrated and participatory development for rural and urban populations. Since 1965, when the PAID Senior Staff School was founded in Douala, Cameroon, the institute has grown steadily; it now works with 46 sub-Saharan countries of Africa. PAID's principal activities are providing training; carrying out studies and research, and giving advice and support to development organizations. In addition, the institute publishes the results of its work and contributes to the strengthening of African institutions. In-service training, targeted at development workers and leaders of development activities with different levels of qualification, includes long-term and short-term training as well as training programmes, sessions and seminars designed and implemented on request. In each case the institute undertakes a training needs study, designs a programme and the required training aids, and evaluates the results. The institute also undertakes the training of trainers. In addition to project identification and design, PAID undertakes field studies linked to development activities. It also studies problems linked to development programmes and policy orientation and provides training and advisory support to development organizations which are promoting local, regional and national development processes through the information, mobilization and participation of the populations concerned. These different activities are undertaken with a team of 60 qualified and experienced trainers/researchers, external consultants and support staff. The team is attached to four regional institutes located in Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Zambia; specialized projects such as 'Women and Health' and the General Secretariat are situated in Douala.
