Scientists in Niger and UK have isolated the female sex pheromones of the pearl millet stem borer. These are now being combined for use in baited traps which will help to control the pest. The pearl millet stem borer is a major pest of millet in West Africa. It can totally destroy millet stems. Recently scientists from the UK's Natural Resources Institute (NRI) extracted, identified and synthesised five pheromone compounds which made up the female sex pheromone. However, field testing showed that only three of these pheromones are important. Researchers at the Sahelian Centre of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in Niger have taken these pheromones and developed pheromone baited traps and dispensers. The traps, which can be made locally can be used to attract and catch large numbers of male moths. Alternatively they may be used to monitor numbers and so act as an early warning system for a serious outbreak of the pest. The pheromones can also be used simply to disrupt insect mating behaviour. Small pieces of rubber are impregnated with the pheromone and placed at intervals in the field. In field trials large numbers of males were caught in pheromone-baited traps in the centre of fields that had no rubber dispensers, but almost no catches were made in fields with the dispensers.
