Notes
The regulations for the import of sugar
under the EBA initiative can be found in Commission regulation 1318/2002
of July 29 2002. The tariff quota for marketing year 2002/2003 is
85,313 tonnes of white sugar or 92,735 tonnes of raw sugar equivalent.
The import regulations for sugar-containing products from the Balkan
countries will also have an effect on the EU market. In September
2000 tariffs and quantitative restrictions were remove don all sugar
products produced in these countries, This saw imports rising from
100,000 tonnes to 268,000 tonnes of refined sugar in the last marketing
year.
Comment:
The removal of tariff and quantitative restrictions on sugar-containing
imports from the Balkans could offer a precedent for ACP countries
to push for the removal of tariffs and quantitative restrictions
on sugar containing imports from ACP countries. Such a measure could
for example greatly benefit the fruit canning industry in certain
ACP countries.
