System Review Follow-Up: Meeting of Minds - Towards a Strategy for the CGIAR in Sub Saharan Africa

The draft summary of a professionally facilitated workshop organized by the CGIAR center directors at ILRI Headquarters, Nairobi, May 10-11, 1999. The Chairman of the CGIAR had assigned to the directors the responsibility for responding to Recommendation 10 of the System Review which recommended special priority for sub-Saharan Africa and the development of a new strategy for the region.The workshop was attended by 33 key representatives of the main stakeholders, meeting under the auspices of the Center Directors' Committee on Sub-Saharan Africa. The purposes were to establish a shared vision with African partners on the role and strategy for the CGIAR, agree on principal priorities and roles for IARCs, and also agree on strategies and mechanisms for better coordination among IARCs, and for cooperation with partners. The output included a short vision statement, elaboration of its main elements, and a list of next steps to be taken.
