    Abstract/Description
    Informal summary of proceedings of the eleventh CGIAR Meeting at the World Bank in Washington, DC, July 29 and 30, 1976, chaired by Warren C. Baum. The meeting followed three days of plenary sessions where centers presented their programs. The European Economic Community attended as a member for the first time. The cosponsors being unable to agreed on a successor to Sir John Crawford as TAC chair on his retirement after the October 1976 meeting, a selection committee was appointed. Its recommendation of Ralph Cummings as the new TAC chairman was approved by acclamation. In his role as Chairman of the Review Committee, Mr. Baum reported on the ongoing System Review. Review Study Director, Alexander McCalla identified general issues in the Review. In connection with the System Review and the 1976 Integrative Report the Group discussed: special projects; cost-benefit analysis of agricultural research; multiyear budgets; restricted contributions; and center working capital.Sir John Crawford reported on the twelfth and thirteenth meetings of the TAC. He presented a revised CGIAR priorities paper and the report of the IRRI Quinquennial Review, endorsed by TAC, and progress reports on reviews of CIMMYT, and CIP. He also commented on vegetables and water buffalo, discussed the progress of TAC subcommittees on grain legumes and on fertilizer; and inter-center relations. Sir John summarized TAC's responses to the 1977 center programs. He pointed to the value of centers working with research institutions in developed countries.Dr. Joel Bernstein presented the conclusions of a National Academy of Sciences study on the contribution US science and technology could make to world food production and relieving malnutrition. The meeting heard donor indications of support for 1977, 1978, and 1979. It received comments from the Center Directors Committee, and agreed to name three members of the IFDC board.
